Peel Crime Stoppers joins representatives from the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Sudbury

From June 9th – 11th, 2011, the Greater Sudbury Police Service staged the 2011 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Floor Hockey Championships.    This is high profile event that is held every 4 years.

These games broaden the awareness and understanding that “team” includes not only athletes and coaches, but the entire community.

It was in this spirit of community involvement that Peel Crime Stoppers directors Scott MacBean and Don Dunphy supported representatives from the Law Enforcement Torch Run from across Ontario in leading the games into Sudbury.   The run started in the east part of Sudbury and participants ran 4 kilometres through the streets of Sudbury to the Laurentian University Campus where the Special Olympians were waiting for them.

Starting in the town of Newmarket, riders cycled 225 scenic kilometres over 2 days to the finish line at Hernder Estates Winery in Niagara Region.

The ride was  hosted by 3 Crime Stoppers programs - Peel, York, and Halton. Crime Stoppers is recognized as an effective means to help solve and reduce crime in the community.  In Peel, we have a strong history of supporting this very successful program, which is funded exclusively through private and corporate contributions.   A big thank you to the 21 cyclists who participated on behalf of Peel Crime Stoppers.   Thanks to their hard work, over $7,800  was raised.”

5/21/2010 - Water Watch Program

Water Watch Program

January 14, 2010

Peel Crime Stoppers has joined forces with MADD Canada and Peel Regional Police to expand the “Water Watch Program”, to promote a safer boating environment and  to reduce the number of impaired drivers.  Shown from left to right are:   Don Dunphy, Vice-Chair of Peel Crime  Stoppers, Andrew Murie, CEO MADD Canada and Sgt. Mark Stafford, Peel Regional Police Marine Unit.

Peel Crime Stoppers were thinking “spring” as they announced an exciting new partnership with MADD Canada and Peel Regional Police Marine Unit at their Crime Stoppers Month media launch in January.  Peel Crime Stoppers commitment in this partnership is to expand the “Water Watch Program”, promote a safer boating environment on the waterways, and reduce the number of impaired boaters in Peel region.

This partnership has been spearheaded in conjunction with Andrew Murie of MADD Canada and Sgt. Mark Stafford of the Peel Regional Police Marine Unit.  As Sgt. Stafford noted “We have identified (impaired boating) as an issue here through our investigations”.

MADD Canada’s popular 911 campaign, which urges people to report impaired drivers on the roads, will hit Mississauga waterways this spring.  Boaters, marina employees and even those enjoying a lakeside walk will be asked to contact 911 to report crimes of an urgent nature. The public will also be asked to contact Crime Stoppers if they wish to anonymously report water related crimes of a non-urgent nature.
